호세아(Hosea) 13 배부름의 배신 Betrayal of Fullness
1.
v6. 그들이 먹여 준 대로 배가 불렀고 배가 부르니 그들의 마음이 교만하여 이로 말미암아 나를 잊었느니라
- 인간의 가장 기본적인 욕구는 ’배부름‘입니다. 여기서 배부름이란 결핍을 느끼지 못하는 어떤 만족의 상태를 의미하지요. 그런데 인간은 참 이상합니다. 배부를 때 인간은 교만해지니 말입니다. “배가 부르니 마음이 교만하여” 이 말씀은 저를 날케롭게 찌릅니다. 배가 부르면 배부르게 해주신 하나님께 감사해야 하는데, 배가 불러 하나님을 잊게 되는 이 끈질긴 죄성을 떨쳐내기가 참 어렵습니다.

v3. 이러므로 그들은 아침 구름 같으며 쉬 사라지는 이슬 같으며 타작마당에서 광풍에 날리는 쭉정이 같으며 굴뚝에서 나가는 연기 같으리라
- ‘구름’‘이슬‘ ‘쭉정이’ ‘연기’. 이 네 가지는 모두 일시적이며 곧 사라지는 것들로 헛됨과 허무함의 대명사들입니다. 하나님을 떠난, 하나님을 잊은 배부름(만족)은 그렇게 곧 사라질 헛된 것이라는 강조입니다. 하나님을 떠난 사람들도 잠시의 배부름은 느낄 수 있겠지만, 그들은 이내 ’배부름의 배신‘을 경험하게 될 것입니다. 하나님 없는 배부름은 사실 가장 큰 영혼의 굶주림입니다.

스물아홉 나이에 에콰도르 밀림에서 아우카족의 창에 찔려 순교한 짐 엘리엇은 이런 말을 했습니다. "영원한 것을 얻고자 영원할 수 없는 것을 버리는 자는 바보가 아니다. He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." 세상이 주는 배부름(만족)의 기만에 그만 속읍시다. 영원히 주리지 않는 생명의 떡을 먹읍시다.
Hosea 13 Betrayal of Fullness

v6. When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; then they forgot me.
- The most basic desire of humans is ‘fullness.’ Here, fullness means a state of satisfaction where one does not feel a lack. However, humans are really strange. When they are full, they become proud. This verse, “When they are full, their hearts are proud,” sharply stabs me. When we are full, we should be thankful to God for filling us, but it is really difficult to shake off this persistent sin that makes us forget God when we are full.

v3. Therefore they will be like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears, like chaff swirling from a threshing floor, like smoke escaping through a window.
-‘morning mist‘, ‘dew’, ‘chaff’, ‘smoke’. These four are all temporary and soon disappear, and they are synonymous with vanity and futility. It emphasizes that the fullness(satisfaction) that leaves God and forgets God is so vain and soon disappears. People who leave God may feel a temporary fullness, but they will soon experience the ‘betrayal of fullness’. Fullness without God is in fact the greatest hunger of the soul.

Jim Elliot, who was martyred by the Aucas in the Ecuadorian jungle at the age of twenty-nine, said this. “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”
Let's stop being fooled by the satisfaction the world gives us. Let us eat the bread of life that will never make us hungry.
